CHAPTER FIFTEEN

THE NEXT MORNING, we rode hard and fast. Voss was determined to get out of the hoswisps’ territory before we became their next meal. There was no safe place to set up camp in these parts of the wilds. With every hour we rode, we were reaching the end of the state. I hadn’t been lying to Raskos when I told him I’d never left the state; that much had been true.

For some stupid reason, I hadn’t thought the king would go this far from the portal, but as we arrived in a borderland court, I was second guessing my knowledge. There was an old port city, which had been largely abandoned by humans after the Fae took over, mostly due to a band of fire pauldrins that burned the entire thing to the ground. Thinking it over, maybe that city was where the king had gone. In Faerie, they didn’t have technology like we had, which meant their trade routes were likely based on waterways.

I could still be wrong, because we could be headed in this direction now only for Voss to lead us somewhere else later. The assassin seemed dead set on keeping our destination secret from me. I understood why. If I had no need for him, what was to keep me sticking around?

Other than the way he made my body feel.

A large stone wall seemed to crop out of nothing, surrounding the border of the court. Fae guards stood on either end of the entrance, but barely glanced at us as we crossed the line into the town. We drove the horses to a stable next to an inn near the outskirts. This place was between Raskos’s bombed out remains and Treborne’s overly lavish lifestyle. There were large farmhouses and some old brownstones which had been converted into a town center. The humans and Fae here seemed to be actually… getting along.

“What is this place?” I asked as I swung my leg to one side of Switch and jumped down from her back. I gave her a few long pats on her silken neck before turning to the three of them.

Penn gestured around us, eyes sparkling. “Welcome to Lord Alpin’s territory.”

I balked. “I heard—”

“You heard wrong,” Voss grunted as he led his horse toward the stables. “Not everything you find on those human networks is true. While some Fae Lords and Ladies are much like Treborne, there are several like Alpin who try to rule fair for both human and Fae. He recognizes one cannot live without the other. There must be harmony between us.”

“One good Fae doesn’t undo everything committed by the others.” I crossed my arms.

“Oh, get over yourself,” Elspeth said. “No one said that. But Alpin is one of the nice guys, and this will be a great place to get a good night’s sleep.” She let out a long yawn.

“You slept pretty well last night,” I said.

“Sure, I did. Keep telling yourself I have no idea what happened between you two.” Elspeth led her horse toward the stable.
